The Word Index displays in a frame on either the left or right side of the Viewer window (it appears on the right by default). The word index is similar to the index of a book; that is, all words in the transcript are listed alphabetically with page and line references. Some words are excluded from the word index, such as articles and conjunctions (an, the, and, or) and words that occur frequently in the transcript. For example, if a word appears 100 times or more in the transcript, it may be excluded from the word index. For detailed information, click the following link: Adjusting Word Index Options.
In the word index column, the letter at the top of the column signifies that you are viewing words beginning with that letter. The bolded word is the indexed word. The page and line number combination (for example, 8:10) represents the page number and the line number, respectively, at which the indexed word appears.
Click the page and line number combination to jump to the location of the indexed word. The word appears highlighted in the transcript text.
You can move backward and forward through instances of the same indexed
word by using the Find Previous (
) and Find Next buttons
(
)on the toolbar. To see the next instance of the word
in the transcript, click the Find Next
button. To see the previous instance of the word in the transcript, click
the Find Previous button. For
detailed information, click the following link: Searching
for Text in a Transcript.
You can resize the word index frame by dragging the frame between the transcript and the word index left or right. Move your mouse over the frame until you see a two-sided arrow. Click and drag the frame to the left or right.
You can also hide the word index by using one of the following methods:
Click the View
Word Index button (
) on the toolbar to show the text
of the transcript only; you can click the button again to display the
word index.
From the E-Transcript Viewer menu bar, select View à Word Index; you can select Word Index again from the View menu to display the word index.
