The procedure below explains how to connect to a Realtime session; however, before you begin, you may want to review the Realtime interface (the screen where you work) to understand your options.
Notice the following:
The issues are readily available from the drop-down menu. What you select becomes the quick mark issue, and you can change your selection quickly during the Realtime transmission. For more information click the following link: Quick Marking.
The Pause button provides an easy way to pause the transmission, but keep in mind the interface is attuned to your mouse clicks. If you click a word in the transcript and hold the mouse button down, the scrolling pauses. If you click the scroll bars on the bottom or right of the Display pane, the scrolling pauses. After you click a scroll bar to pause the transcript, click the transcript text to restart the scrolling (clicking the Pause button restarts a paused transcript as well).
The Disconnect button is designed to accommodate the flow of a normal workday. If another court reporter takes over a session during the day and activity stops, you can Disconnect. Or, if it is lunchtime and you want to take your computer with you during lunch, you can disconnect. To reconnect, select Transcript à Connect to Realtime from the menu bar.
Use the following procedure to connect to a Realtime session:
Connect your computer to the court reporter’s Realtime PC using an RJ-11 cable with 9-pin serial port send and receive adapters. Attach the adapter marked send to the court reporter’s extra serial port and the adapter marked receive to your RealLegal Binder PC. It is recommended that both adapters be from the same company. In the past, customers have had problems when attempting to link computers with two kinds of adapters.
On the main toolbar of RealLegal Binder, select the New Realtime Transcript button from the New button drop-down menu. A dialog box displays the terms of a Realtime transcript.
Click the Yes, I Accept button to accept the terms of the agreement. The Realtime Properties dialog box opens.
Select the options as follows:
Source: To view the Realtime demo, click the drop-down list and then click File. To run a Realtime court-reporting session, click the drop-down list and then click Serial Port.
If you are having trouble with the connection, verify that the Serial Port is selected in the Source drop-down list.
Port: Click the Port button to verify that the setting of the Baud Rate field matches the baud rate settings on the reporter's machine.
If problems persist, verify that the operating system Flow Settings are set the same on both sending and receiving computers and that no other communication devices are interfering with the connection. Refer to the Troubleshooting Realtime topic for details.
Enforce lines per page: Click this option to force a standard number of lines per page (for example, 25).
Click the Next button. The Realtime Properties dialog box opens.
Select the options and complete the fields as follows:
Type: Select the option for the type of transcript: Fact Witness, Expert, Court Transcript, or Other.
Last: Type the last name of the deponent.
First: Type the first name of the deponent.
Vol: Type the volume number of the transcript.
Start: Type a date or click the drop-down list to select a date from the calendar.
Time: Click this option to display the time of the transcript. Type the time or use the up and down arrow buttons to adjust the time incrementally by one hour.
Title: The title of the transcript is generated automatically as you enter information into the fields above. You can change this title manually; however, the field is not generated automatically again until you delete all text in the field.
Click the Next button.
Ask the court reporter to send some text to your computer. If you have a problem, refer to the Troubleshooting Realtime topic.
After everything is working correctly, select Transcript à Clear Realtime Transcript from the menu bar to remove the sample text, or you can wait until you update the transcript to remove the sample text automatically.
When you have been successfully connected to the live feed, the transcript text scrolls in the Display pane as the court reporter enters testimony.
