RealLegal E-Transcript Internet Saves Paralegal Time, Money and Storage Space

Transcript Condensing Blues
Working as a paralegal at Becherer, Kannett and Schweitzer in Emeryville, CA, Barbara L. Nielsen received many ASCII-formatted transcripts. Like many paralegals, Barbara needed to review and print full-size pages for the firm’s attorneys, as well as for expert witnesses and the courts. But trying to use the ASCII-formatted transcripts to search and print full-size text meant time-consuming reformatting.

“Not all court reporters set up transcripts in the same format, either,” said Barbara. “When trying to review an ASCII file in a word processing program such as Word or Word Perfect, the formatting didn’t match so the pagination would be off, and you can get wild inconstancies when trying to search. There was no way to use the ASCII file to produce a condensed transcript in any easy way — we needed a condensed transcript done by the court reporter.”

Barbara’s struggles using ASCII files to search and print transcripts also produced unwanted costs. “Deadlines are important in this business. Sometimes I need a condensed transcript by a drop-dead deadline, and I would have to pay a lot of money to receive it on time.”

Barbara Gets a Break
Then last year, Barbara received her first RealLegal E-Transcript™ from a court reporter. “The first time I got an E-Transcript, I opened it, and there sat a ‘true’ transcript,” Barbara said. Now she won’t even work with ASCIIs.

RealLegal E-Transcript™ is the litigation market standard in digital transcripts sent electronically to an attorney from a court reporter. E-Transcript files come as read-only, accurate, encrypted, virus and password-protected, electronically signed transcripts. No special software is needed to open, view, search or print the transcript.

With its guaranteed page and line number integrity, RealLegal E-Transcript eliminated the time and money Barbara spent wrestling with ASCII files. An E-Transcript looks just like the thousands of paper transcripts attorneys and paralegals are accustomed to reviewing, only it’s electronic, compact, interactive and easy to use. “I was amazed at how well it worked — at what a great thing it was!”

Barbara Sticks with the Best
So now when Barbara can’t get an E-Transcript from a court reporter, she just makes her own. Anyone can create an E-Transcript through E-Transcript Internet -- the Web-based application for creating E-Transcripts without E-Transcript Manager software. Those who create E-Transcript files through E-Transcript Internet are charged a small per-use fee.

Using E-Transcript Internet, Barbara no longer had to experience the lost time, money and aggravation of reformatting ASCII files herself to use in Word or Word Perfect. “In March, when RealLegal offered its free introductory period for the conversion of ASCII files with E-Transcript Internet, I converted every file we had. Now at $20 a pop to convert files, that’s not bad either.”

“We even considered buying the E-Transcript software ourselves to convert old ASCII files we had, and to convert new ASCII files received from court reporters who don’t have the E-Transcript software.”
